Review - Mike Harding
John Faulkner is soaked in the tradition and respected across the folk world for more than half a century. From
his work with Ewan MacColl’s Critics group and his work with Dolores Keane his songwriting and his numerous productions have garnered the rightful respect of his peers in the folk world and audiences all over that world.
His new CD is a real gem, deeply rooted and produced with a deft, light touch
Storm In My Heart doesn’t have a duff note or word.
The musicians gathered around him include Fergus Feely, Tony Trundle, Brian McGrath, Dermot Byrne, Declan, O’Rourke and John Prine and nothing is wasted or overstated.
All written or co-written by John, and as ever they are carefully crafted, ranging from a beautiful but painful song about the street children of Sao Paulo to the countryesque Tonight As We Dance which sounds as though Dolly Parton may have written it. All of his songs have that one essential element - total authenticity.
One of my albums of the year, I reckon it won’t be long before people across the folk world are covering these classic songs.
